This morning, friends Bastian, Keiko and I went on a long run, from Jamaica Pond down to Fenway Park. The run there was pretty easy, mostly downhill, and I was deceived.
Because the run home was brutal. I kept trying to push the pace, and the uphill left me gasping for breath. Bastian and Keiko motored past me as I limped to the pond. I felt like Ignatius Reilly in John Kennedy Toole’s novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. What happened?
I’m not sure. I’m certainly not in optimal shape, but I think it goes beyond that. Perhaps I went out too fast, and was pushing myself too hard up the hill, going faster and then slower like a jackrabbit who sprints and then pauses to rest. I also don’t have a heart rate pacing watch, like top marathoner Eliud Kipchoge uses, and I think I was getting tachycardic.
Lessons learned? Get in shape. Stay in balance. Be focused, self-confident, self-disciplined. We’ll see what happens on the next long run.

You look tired.
I was.
Air can also affect runs. I’ve been doing the peloton app. I like some of the mental tips they give
Yes pm 2.5 concentration and other pollutants.
You forgot to mention you were an excellent tour guide while running with us the entire time!
Ha! Thanks:)
Thanks
